What happened?
On October 9, 2026, Deno and Cloudflare announced that the entire Deno team is joining Cloudflare. Deno will combine its celld work with Cloudflare’s open-source workerd. Deno Deploy will run for six more months, and the team will maintain the runtime for one year before ending its development. The runtime remains open source, JSR continues, and paying Deno Deploy customers are promised migration support to Cloudflare Workers. Neither announcement states acquisition terms.
Why it matters
Freelancers responsible for client systems on Deno Deploy now have a vendor-confirmed continuity deadline and an opportunity to scope inventory, portability testing, migration, and client communication. Runtime-only users have more time and should distinguish maintenance risk from an immediate outage.
What should you do?
Classify each affected project as Deno Deploy, Deno runtime elsewhere, or JSR-only. For Deploy projects, export configuration and data, map Deno-specific APIs, test a target host in staging, and agree migration budget and timing with the client. For runtime-only projects, apply monthly security releases and prepare a tested contingency plan.
